The Best Fast Food for Your Diet
Your work schedule is tight – meetings and conferences and phone calls all day long. If you are lucky to get a moment to eat, you probably only have time to wolf down a hamburger from the fast food joint by your office, or something from the employee lounge vending machine, assuming you were unable to pack a lunch. Assuming, of course, you have time to shop for groceries at all!
In our society of quick fixes and rushed time, however, we find that many people who eat on the run wind up on the express lane to obesity, despite the output of energy in a given day. We know it is a vicious cycle that must be broken, but is there a way to at least tap the brakes a bit without crashing?
If you keep up with the news, you may have noticed the more popular fast food chains have altered their menus in order to compete with the rise of “fast casual” restaurants – sit-down establishments that resembles more formal eateries, but deliver food with the same speed and efficiency of a fast food place. Walk into a newly renovated McDonald’s and likely you won’t see plastic cartoon characters inviting you to sit in molded plastic booths. You may find a more relaxed atmosphere, mature decor and even wireless access so you can take work to lunch. Next to the colorful kids’ meals on the menu, too, you will find more sophisticated fare, like salads and fruit and vegetable side options.
So if you choose to continue the fast track to lunch, what should you eat in order to maintain a good diet? For all the changes in appearance, burgers and fries are still burgers and fries, and the sodium and fat contents of both remain despite the packaging.
For our Compuslim.com customers, we are happy to suggest menus to help slow the fat attack. We hope you will find this information valuable as well.
Coupled with bottled water instead of soda (always the best choice as far as drinks go), you can find some nutritional value when you eat on the run. Keep an even pace with just 30 minutes of exercise a day, and the next changes you see may appear in the way you look and feel.
Please note, though, that eating the meals on a regular basis will not guarantee weight loss. This guide is merely to offer the healthiest possible alternatives when patronizing these establishments. We at Compuslim hope our everybody who is serious about losing weight will continue to research their nutrition needs and learn what foods are best for them to eat to sustain a healthy lifestyle.
McDonald’s
To look at Ronald McDonald, it appears he has always looked slim, yet not everybody who includes McDonald’s food in a regular diet looks the same way. Just one Big Mac is 560 calories and has 30 grams of fat – on many eating regimens, that could represent a half a day of eating! For menu options that won’t take bust your belt or your wallet, you could try the following:
OPTION ONE: One regular hamburger, one side salad with light balsamic vinegarette dressing (used sparingly)
OPTION TWO: California Cobb Salad without chicken, with light balsamic vinegarette dressing (used sparingly)
OPTION THREE: Asian Salad no chicken with light sesame ginger dressing (used sparingly)
Burger King
You can still “have it your way” at this landmark chain restaurant, and the good news is that your way doesn’t necessarily have to lead to weight gain. Next time you visit the King, try the alternatives to the hamburgers offered:
OPTION ONE: Grilled chicken sandwich and side salad, dressing used sparingly
OPTION TWO: Grilled chicken salad, dressing used sparingly
Wendy’s
One of Wendy’s biggest selling points is their value menu, where you can find a number of items for about a dollar each. It may surprise you to know, too, a number of these items have been offered for many years, and have always been good alternatives to triple-patty hamburgers:
OPTION ONE: Large chili, side salad, dressing used sparingly
OPTION TWO: Baked Potato no butter or sour cream, large chili
OPTION THREE: Grilled chicken sandwich, side salad, dressing used sparingly
Taco Bell
Oftentimes people are led to believe that if food contains certain ingredients or is prepared in a certain way (like in a tortilla instead of a carb-heavy bun), that it must be healthier. Not necessarily so. Wherever you go, be vigilant about what you eat, and if you head for this border you may want to consider the following for your next meal:
OPTION ONE: Chicken “Enchirito” no cheese, “Cinnamon Twists”
OPTION TWO: Bean burrito no cheese, “Cinnamon Twists”
OPTION THREE: Two chicken soft tacos, no cheese or avocado dressing
To calculate possible menus at other popular fast food restaurants, visit the corporate websites of your favorite restaurants. Many have online calculators handy to total the overall nutritional value of your food choices. From there you can make sound decisions about what you eat.

Making the decision that your elderly parent needs more than assistance in their own home is a difficult one. However, finding an assisted living home that meets your needs can ease the process. What sorts of things should you consider when choosing an assisted living home?
1. Proximity. If possible, choose a home that is close to your own so you can visit often and spontaneously. Knowing you are just a few minutes away will be comforting to your parent and will ease the transition.
2. Caregivers. Visit the home during each shift to meet the caregivers. States require training and certification, but you should look for experienced caregivers who genuinely enjoy caring for the elderly. Sometimes you can tell by the expressions on their faces if they are happy there, or just going through the motions. Ask how many caregivers there are per shift, and how many residents live in the home. Try to find an assisted living home with a high caregiver to resident ratio.
3. Meals. Visit during mealtimes. It is important that the food served be nutritious and delicious. The elderly eat less as they age. Appetites diminish over time, and taste buds degenerate. Food must be appetizing, fresh and high quality so that the amount eaten provides adequate nutrition. Ideally, choose an assisted living home with a nutritionist on staff, or one that consults with nutritionists for meal planning. Be sure the home caters to dietary needs and offers substitutes for restricted items.
4. Activities. Activities should nurture the body, mind and spirit, and create community. Ask for the monthly calendar of activities. Are the activities interesting, fun, engaging, varied? The primary reason the elderly are placed in assisted living homes is concern for their safety living alone. An assisted living home should not only be a safe place, but one of community for your loved one. Are residents in the common areas, or are they all sequestered in their rooms? Do they speak to each other at meals or during activities, or are the only voices those of the caregivers?
5. Amenities. Amenities can add much to the quality of life in a care home. This is where care homes can differ significantly. Ask what makes their home special. Do they nurture the body, mind and spirit? Do they offer holistic therapies? Special programs? Do they have doctors that make house calls?
6. Volunteers. Befriend volunteers, as they can be eyes and ears of anything amiss with the home. Homes that are interested in the well being of their residents will often utilize volunteers, such as for reading out loud, helping residents with writing cards or checks, etc., because it allows them to offer more to their residents.
7. Pets. There are organizations all across the country that train pets and their owners to provide therapy visits. Visits with animals are particularly appreciated by the elderly, especially those with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Find out if volunteers come to the home, and what they do for the residents.
8. Cleanliness. Is the home neat and clean? Do the bathrooms look and smell clean? Are the common areas tidy? Do the residents look groomed and are their clothes clean? (Residents have rights and they are free to refuse showers, food, medication, assistance with dressing and hygiene, all of which can cause a resident to appear uncared for; however, the resident’s doctor, guardian or relatives are to be notified so that any underlying issues can be addressed. If all the residents appear to be unkempt, there may be an issue with the care being provided.)
9. Violations. States have regulatory agencies that keep track of the violations of assisted living homes. It may not concern you that much if a care home failed to chart one of its routine fire drills, but it should concern you if there have been multiple claims of abuse, neglect, or safety issues.
10. Cost. Care homes usually have sliding fees based on the size of the room, whether it is a suite with a private bath, and the level of care the resident requires. The more care, the higher the fee. The larger the room, the more the cost, with suites being the most expensive. Personal items, such as Depends, other hygiene items, denture creams, medication, etc. are all the responsibility of the resident. Meals and snacks, assistance with daily needs such as getting up, going to bed, bathing, toileting, cleaning, laundry service, activities and entertainment are usually included in the monthly fee. Find out what is not included in the fee, so that there are no surprises at the end of the month. And do not be afraid to ask what their policy is in raising fees: do they give notice, how often have they raised fees in the past, do they anticipate raising fees in the next six months?
Take a checklist or list of questions when you visit care homes. Make sure you get the answers to all your questions so that you are fully informed when making your decision. When you’ve done your homework and narrowed it down to the best 3 or 4 that meet your needs, if possible, take your parent to tour the homes. Allow your parent to select the one that feels right for them. You’ll ease the transition by including your parent in the decision-making, and you’ll both have peace of mind that you’ve made the best choice.

Do You Want To Build Your Own Wind Generator?
You’ll be very happy to know that you can do just that. You just need the right DIY plans to do it. You can save thousands of dollars from what you would pay if you bought a wind generator. Did you know that a purchased wind generator can cost as much as $2500? You can actually build your own for under $100.
What Should You Be Looking For In DIY Windmill Generator Plans?
- Easy to ready & easy to follow plans.
- The plans must create a generator that can produce over 1000 watts of power.
- The supplies needed should cost less than $100.
- The supplies should all be material that is readily available.
- Must be easy to build.
- The generator built should be tough so it can endure the Winter months.
FAQ About Wind Generators
1. How will I know how much power production I need?
You should be aim for about 10 kilowatt hours per day but you can probably get by with much less than that. Some conservative people run their home on only 3 kilowatt hours per day.
2. How do I calculate how much power I’ll be producing with my generator?
(Wind Speed ^3) (Blade Diameter ^2) x .00478
Wind Speed as measured in miles per hour & Blade Diameter as measured in feet.
For example if your wind power is 10 mph on average and your blade is 8 feet in diameter then you would calculate your system’s power like this:
(10 X 10 X 10) (8 X
X .00478. That works out to 1000 X 64 X .00478 which works out to 305 watts. Multiply that by 24 hours to get your kilowatt hours per day. Such as 305 X 24 = 7320 which is 7.3 kilowatt hours per day.
As you can see from this equation as wind power is cubed it is the most important variable in how much power you create with your windmill.
3. Should I build one large wind generator or many small ones?
Usually it’s much easier to build smaller wind generators. It will probably be much easier for you to build 3 small wind generators than one huge one.

Are you thinking about purchasing your first pet hermit crab? If so, there are several things you need to know about hermit crabs before you decide to bring them home to be your pets. While you will need to do a great deal of research in order to provide your hermit crab with the best living environment possible, here are some of the basics involved with hermit crab care.
Obtaining the Right Temperature
Before you even bring your hermit crabs home, you need to set up a home that will allow your new pet to stay happy, healthy and comfortable. Namely, your hermit crab will need a home that never falls below 72 degrees Fahrenheit. If your hermit crab is consistently exposed to lower temperatures, it could die. Similarly, if the temperatures are too high, it can become overheated and die a slow and painful death. Recognizing an overheated hermit crab is relatively simple, as it will start to emit a musty smell and may actually start to discharge a brown liquid.
Creating the Proper Humidity Levels
Hermit crabs also require a certain level of humidity in their homes. Ideally, your hermit crab’s home should be maintain at least 70% humidity. The goal is to create a tropical feel within your hermit crab’s habitat. Therefore, the moister the better. You can help keep the habitat moist by squirting the inside of the tank with water on a frequent basis.
Making it Cozy
Your hermit crab habitat is also going to require the right substrate, which is the substance you use to line the bottom of the terrarium. You will need to keep a fairly thick level of substrate in your tank so your hermit crabs can bury themselves deep inside. At the same time, you will need to use an under-tank heater in order to maintain the proper temperature. Therefore, you don’t want to make the substrate so thick that the heater isn’t able to properly warm up the habitat.
Decorating the Tank
When it comes to hermit crabs, you can have quite a bit of fun with decorating the tank. Hermit crabs love to play, to hide, and to climb. Therefore, they will enjoy pretty much anything you put in the tank. Dried wood, driftwood, sand-blasted grapevines, and plastic plants are all good options. Hermit crabs also enjoy climbing up plastic reptile ladders and some have even been known to roll around in plastic hamster balls! Of course, you will also want to put plenty of shells and other items that your hermit crab can wear as a shell. After all, half the fun of owning a hermit crab is watching what he will wear next!
Giving it a Friend
When you decide to keep a hermit crab as a pet, you are actually deciding to purchase at least two of them. Despite the name “hermit,” these crabs like to be around other hermit crabs. In fact, in the wild, they often stick together in packs of 100. In addition, some research has indicated that a hermit crab without a friend is more likely to become sick and even to die. Therefore, it is best to include at least two in your tank.

You have the occasional argument. Sometimes you feel frustrated, and you have that uneasy sense that everything is not as it should be. Is your relationship in trouble? The answer may not be obvious. Take this quiz to measure the overall state of your relationship and highlight the trouble spots.
1. When you have an argument, is it about a specific issue, or is it about your partner’s character? A specific issue would be, “You forgot to take out the garbage last night,” while “you never remember anything,” is a generalized character assassination.
2. Do you have more conflict or less conflict when the two of you get time alone together? Do a “date night” or a few days away renew your relationship, or create more stress?
3. Is there physical violence in your relationship? Have you come close to physical violence? Are there threats of physical violence?
4. How often does the thought that you would rather be with someone else pass through your mind?
5. Take one minute to write a list of what you like and what you dislike about your partner. How many “likes” and how many “dislikes” are on your list?
6. Do you seriously question your partner’s faithfulness?
7. Do you have arguments about sex?
8. In times of emergency or grief – such as when a relative becomes ill or dies, do you and your partner pull together?
9. If you could turn the clock back to the day you first met your partner, would you choose a different direction for your life?
10. If you won the lottery, would you be overjoyed to share the blessing with your partner, or would you wish it were all yours?
Physical violence or threats are the biggest danger signs for your relationship and for your personal safety. If they are present, get professional help TODAY.
The following are all danger signs for your relationship. If several are present, your relationship is in real trouble:
- character assassination
- fantasizing often about being with someone else
- not having ready access to a list of your partner’s great qualities
- doubts of faithfulness
- serious sexual incompatibility
- lack of mutual support in times of crisis
- a feeling of being stuck or obligated by the relationship
Question #2 offers hope that your relationship may be much sounder than it appears. Conflict in your relationship may be primarily a reflection of the stress in your individual lives.
Often, partners redirect frustration and anger about unrelated events toward each other. For example, your boss yelled at you, and you yell at your partner. This unconscious redirection is a behavior that can be overcome through conscious attention, and is not a reflection on the overall quality of your relationship. If you and your partner are loving and supportive toward each other in relatively stress-free situations, you likely have a basis for working through your other issues.
