Building Self Esteem: An Art’s Great Benefit
If you have never accomplished anything in your life, chances are you have low self-esteem. You don’t know the challenge and you don’t know the great feeling you get from meeting the challenge. You’re not alone. Life doesn’t always afford everyone the opportunity to actually accomplish anything.
Most individuals find themselves lumped into a certain category, following a predestined path. Get a good job. Start a family. Work toward retirement. Raise your kids the right way. Nothing at all is wrong with a life like this. It’s solid. It’s stable. It’s reliable.
But, it has its pitfalls. Psychologically as you grow older, you realize you may have missed a true calling. You might start wondering if there was anything you could have done better. You look at the handful of people who have achieved great things and you wonder why that couldn’t have been you. This is not positive thinking. But, it is normal.
Pick up a brush and stare straight at a blank canvas. Get the feel for an image you have in your mind. If you have to, use this negative thinking that you have for the good. Imagine yourself running across a finish line first. Imagine yourself climbing a mountain. Now, paint that picture that’s in your mind.
You’re on your way to achieving a great thing, the greatest thing. You are creating. Not only that, you are learning that life isn’t over. You haven’t missed a thing. And you did your best, nothing to regret. Instead of wondering why it couldn’t have been you, it is you. Look at your canvas. You’ve achieved.
Kids who start out early in life loving art have a better chance at moving right past those awkward years where they begin to question themselves. Normal childlike thinking has the ability to set kids back and keep them from trying something where there is a chance they might fail. Kids who love art know that there is always another blank canvas and they start to look at life that way. They learn early that you can’t always succeed. The glory is in that you tried.
Adults also benefit from picking up the brush even if they have never done it before. They might catch on to this great benefit a little later in life, but it’s never too late to learn such a great life’s lesson. The sense of achievement proves to us that we can do anything. The loss or failure is taken as a calculated risk, often an enlightening one. Artists are less likely to be depressed although there are a few instances that exist to the contrary. Art breathes life into them. The next conquest, they love the challenge.
There are so many benefits to art that it is too numerous to try to count. Building a sense of self and a high self esteem is one of the better ones. Everyone should feel the feeling of being proud, enjoying life’s challenges rather than cowering to them.
An internationally known artist as well as a mother of six, Rivky Shimon founded Rivkys Art Workshop in New York. Rivkys step-by-step method for teaching children how to create and enjoy art has earned high praise from students, teachers and parents alike. Through her new training series, Rivky plans to teach artists from across the country how to duplicate her success. Not only to ensure that art education remains a vital part of every child’s life, but also to enforce the reality that “The Rivky Method” tm works the same magic for adults as well.

I’ve been reading and believing the Bible for over 50 years. I unapologetically say that my worldview is between the covers of that Book. The way the born again see it is this: There is God, and there is everything else.
But the transcendant God, we believe, has entered our bounds, and walked with us in the person of Jesus Christ, Himself God and man. We teach that after His cruel death and glorious resurrection, He ascended to Heaven, then came back via Spirit to His followers. (This is not to discount a bodily return at the climax of world history.)
As He filled and fills His disciples with Himself, He actually exerts an influence in the world that He likened to salt and light. God’s people, filled with Christ Himself, are preserving this planet and giving it the only true guidance it has.
He is here. He is working steadily among men to call out a people for Himself. All of this, while kingdoms rise and fall around Him and His people. All this while nature rages and time rushes to its final destiny.
Let me break it down more:
The world. Created by God for God.
The world. Corrupted by man in the face of God.
The world. Loved by God and redeemed by His blood for those interested.
The world. Overseen by God but now managed by Satan until all rule is given to Christ.
The world. To be destroyed and renewed and ruled by God’s people, when Christ returns.
The world. A place now of temptation and danger.
The world. The enemy of the souls of men, posing as its friend.
The world. Setting of spiritual battles directed from the heavenlies.
The world. Here, we are pilgrims, passing through.
The world. Its peoples are loved by God, but its ways are to be avoided by believers.
“God so loved the world (not the corruption but the needy people) that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life .”
John 3:16
That’s God’s worldview. Though we have corrupted ourselves, He holds out His hand and calls us still…

11th July 2007 marks a landmark in the history of the Ismaili Muslim community, as this day marks the completion of the 50th year of Imamate of the leader of the Ismaili Muslim community, Prince Karim Aga Khan 1V. He is the current (49th) Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. His contribution in the field of education, medicine, architecture, social work, institution building, relief work, etc., is spectacular. He always tried to bring the positive image of Islam in front of others. His attractive personality has influenced many Muslim brothers to work for the welfare of the people. He is the direct descendant of Sir Aga Khan 111, whose contribution for the establishment of Pakistan can never be forgotten.
Prince Karim Aga Khan, the Aga Khan IV is the eldest son of Prince Aly Salman Khan and his wife, Princess Tajudowlah. He was born in Geneva, Switzerland on December 13, 1936. His brother name is Prince Amyn, and sister name is Princess Yasmin Aga Khan. The Aga Khan spent his childhood in Nairobi, Kenya, where his early education was done by private tutoring. The Aga Khan later attended the Institute le Rosey in Switzerland. He graduated from Harvard University in 1959 with a BA Honors Degree in Islamic history. As a modern leader of Islam, he always tried to emphasize to improve the lives of the Muslims.
Following the death of his grandfather, Sultan Muhammad Shah Aga Khan, Prince Karim, at the age of 20, became the 49th Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims on 11 July 1957.
Upon becoming the Imam, the Aga Khan stated that he intended to continue the work his grandfather had pursued in building modern institutions to improve the quality of life of the Ismaili community. The main themes that the Aga Khan emphasized are development, education, interracial harmony, and faith in religion. He elaborated on this concept in a 2006 speech in Germany stating,
“The role and responsibility of an Imam, therefore, is both to interpret the faith to the community, and also to do all within his means to improve the quality, and security of their daily lives.” Throughout the early years of his Imamate, the Aga Khan continued his grandfather’s work through the establishment of institutions such as the Aga Khan hospital in Nairobi in 1958, and primary and secondary schools in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda in the 1960s, The Aga Khan Hospital in Pakistan, and numerous educational institutions throughout the world. We can say that he is the leader of a common man. He is the King of the Muslim community. He always work for the betterment of the lives of the people of the third world country.
The Aga Khan has been particularly interested in the elimination of global poverty; eradication of illiteracy; the advancement of the status of women; the promotion of Islamic culture, music, art, and architecture, upgrading the economical status of the third world country, etc.
Prince Aga Khan always believes in building bridges between religions. He always tried to restore peace in the world and brought the positive image of Islam in the modern world.
In 1977, the Aga Khan established the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, a premier award recognizing excellence in architecture that encompasses contemporary design and social, historical, and environmental considerations. It is the largest architectural award in the world.
He is the founder and Chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network, one of the largest private development networks in the world, which works towards social, economic, and cultural development in Asia and Africa. The establishment of the AKDN brought under the same umbrella a number of development agencies and institutions that The Aga Khan’s humanitarian endeavors draw inspiration from ethics of compassion, generosity, sincerity, etc.
Few of the agencies of AKDN are as under:
Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AAKAM) Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) Aga Khan Planning and Building Services (AKPBS) Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) Aga Khan University (AKU) The University of Central Asia (UCA) Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS), an affiliate of the AKDN, is responsible handling disasters. Recent example includes the massive earthquake in Pakistan, Oct 8, 2005. Prince Aga Khan team handled the prevailing problematic situation effectively.
He is also the Chairman of The Institute of Ismaili Studies, which he founded in 1977. This institute is one of the best Institutes, where different Islamic degrees programmes for our younger generations are being offered. The objective of IIS is to promote scholarship and learning of Muslim cultures and societies, historical as well as contemporary, and a better understanding of their relationship with other societies and faiths.
The Aga Khan has been recognized by several national and international organizations for his service to humanity. Few of them are as follows:
The Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland has awarded him the title of His Highness on July 26, 1957. On August 12, 1957, the Sultan of Zanzibar invested the title of Brilliant Star of Zanzibar. It was his first visit to Pakistan with his wife when the President of Pakistan granted the title of Nishan-e-Imtiaz on January 15, 1970.
The World Monuments Fund honored the Aga Khan IV with its prestigious Hadrian Award for his vigorous and fruitful efforts to preserve and revitalize historic cities in Islamic world on October 28, 1996 at New York.
In 2003, he was named Knight Commander in the Order of the British Empire (KBE) “for services to international development, especially in Asia and Africa, and to UK-French relations.” In 2005, he was awarded the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Philanthropy, the 2005 Die Quadriga and the 2005 Vincent Scully Prize. He was also named Honorary Companion of the Order of Canada. His Highness has been awarded honorary degrees by universities in Pakistan, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. He has also received numerous awards and prizes from various professional organisations in recognition of his work in architecture and the conservation of historic buildings. There are around more than 18 million followers of Prince Aga Khan throughout the world. Whatever he has done for boosting the economy of Pakistan by investing in to various sectors like hotel industry, banking, etc., are laudable. His Highness the Aga Khan donated $50-million to support rehabilitation, socio-economic development, and earthquake-preparedness in areas of the North West Frontier Province and Azad Jammu and Kashmir affected by the 8 October 2005 shock. Prince Aga Khan provided a combination of financial and technical support to the urban and rural communities in high-mountain, seismically sensitive areas in Pakistan, Afghanistan and parts of Central Asia. There are many schools, colleges and universities in Pakistan as well, which were created by him for the development of intellects in Pakistan.
Scholars have called his community, the Shia Ismaili Muslims, the most progressive, organized, schooled and financially well-off sect within Islam.
Today, he is working all over the world to eradicate the social problems. His basic concern is of Muslim brothers and sisters, for whom he works day and night for their upliftment. He is creating a positive image of Islam globally for which we salute him.
He is truly the leader of Islam in this modern world. Wish him a very happy Golden Jubilee.

A career planning test can be very purposeful. It can help a person realize his planning abilities, maturity in decision-making and basic career management. The career planning tests can aid you to find your aptitude level and your abilities. It can clarify all the queries in you. An employment counselor can chip in to help you choose the right occupation. A career planning tool is not a magic weapon but an eye-opening tool which can point out to you the best possible options for consideration.
These are done either on paper or in a computer. Standardized assessment instrument or inventory, as it’s also called, is usually provided by professionals. These professional people usually are career counselors. Students, in general, write a lot of such tests to locate themselves in the career-radar. Elementary school students are generally not advised to take these tests because of their mental maturity.
Career planning tests which deal with work values, ethics and lifestyle values are also taken up by students to explore the different types of jobs. Are you feeling the stress in a world that continually changes? With the world around us in a constant state of change, how do you cope? Many routes are open to you, from buying a more powerful computer to studying economics. For most people, one place to start is to concentrate on your own mind and to develop the capacities that new circumstances will reward. In other words, develop and expand your own intelligence.
Is it actually possible to increase your own intelligence? Many people still see intelligence as a fixed resource measured by IQ tests. Interestingly, psychologists have increasingly come to reject this view. In 1995 psychologist David Perkins, a professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, published Outsmarting IQ: The Emerging Science of Learnable Intelligence. In this book, Perkins spoke for a growing number of psychologists who reject the notion that intelligence cannot change.
What has caused this revolution in thinking among psychologists? Perkins and other psychologists came to realize that intellectual abilities are in essence no different from other kinds of know-how. Acquiring the knowledge that IQ tests measure is essentially no different from developing any other ability, such as drawing or bike riding.
Virtually everybody can draw. Give children crayons or pencils and they will draw. Even crippled or mentally subnormal children usually enjoy drawing. Nevertheless, except for a gifted minority, most people do not draw especially well. They can learn to draw well, of course, but only by study and practice. They can improve their skill even further by reading books or taking courses that present advanced drawing techniques and art theory. Drawing is a learnable skill. The proof lies in the number of people who have learned to draw.
Bicycle riding is another learnable skill. If you are starting out learning to ride a bicycle, you need considerable practice and maybe a few falls. But eventually, you will succeed and will probably remember the skill for the rest of your life.
Here then is the critical question. Aren’t intelligence and thinking just as learnable as drawing and bicycle riding? Like drawing and bicycle riding, exercising your mind is something that you do naturally. You can learn how to develop good memory skills to improve your memory, by training your memory. In addition, you can acquire mental skills that allow you to accelerate your learning, develop quicker thinking and accelerate your learning. Nevertheless, without practice, your skill as a thinker can remain rudimentary. How can you strengthen your mind? There are tools and techniques that offer methods, tools and information that can help you improve your recall ability and to use your mind more successfully. Most people in the past have conceived of intelligence as being equivalent to what you may call mental power.
Until recently almost everyone in our society, professional psychologists and the layman alike, considered you to be very intelligent if you had a powerful mind, regardless of whether or not you were particularly adaptable. A smart person was someone who could use his or her mind to do something that seemed difficult and complicated. You could appear intelligent if you were skillful at games that seem to require mental power, such as chess, or if you could intimidate people with your talent at winning arguments. On the other hand, if you were adaptable, most people would probably never have noticed.
One of the main problems with a power-oriented view of intelligence was that power intelligence often proved rigid and inflexible. It is the dinosaur of the intelligence world. And like the dinosaur in prehistoric times, people with power intelligence did indeed reign supreme, as long s conditions in the outside world were essentially stable. But when change replaced stability as the norm, these people quickly became lost. They were no longer in their element. And their old way of looking at the world, which they had built up over many, many years, was suddenly obsolete. They became vulnerable.
A second problem was that power intelligence often did not turn out to be useful, regardless of how much it could impress. Being good at winning arguments or chess matches can certainly impress people. But it does not necessarily help in earning a living. The world is full of people who can impress us with how much they know, but all their knowledge does not necessarily do them a lot of good in the real world. Think of all the people with PhD’s who end up earning a living as cab drivers?
In times of rapid change, you will often do better to have a simpler, more schematic view of reality, one that captures the essence of things even if it misses some of the details. For starters, changing your mind becomes easier. It costs less in time and energy because you do not have to re-examine as many beliefs or re-evaluate as many commitments. In a word it makes you more adaptable.
In the future, adaptability is likely to prove more important than power. You will do better to have a simpler, sleeker, and more elegant mind that can reinterpret and revise what you already know in response to new information. You need new memory and learning skills to stay adaptable. People who immerse themselves in complexity might find themselves so weighed down by details that they feel unable to respond.
Martin Mak has developed a new program to help you improve your memory and enhance your learning experience. Find out more with his popular and free ecourse.

Barack Obama will be the President of the United States (POTUS) in a mere 40 days. To now, he has filled most of his Cabinet and not only with people that agree with him: Two of his rivals for the nomination, Hillary Clinton and Bill Richardson have been named Secretary of State and Secretary of Commerce respectively. Obama has history on his side in appointing his rivals to important posts: Abraham Lincoln did it following his election in 1860, as did Franklin Roosevelt did the same in 1932-33. Obama has told us that he has read up on both of his predecessors when making these decisions. All of the cabinet posts require confirmation by the United States Senate, under the ‘…advice and consent…’ clause of the Constitution.
One of Obama’s first appointments was to ask Robert Gates to remain as Secretary of Defense. Gates proved on more than one ocassion during the Bush Administration that he was not going to be a ‘yes’ man and to tell President G.W. Bush just what he thought of the actions in Iraq and Afghanistan. The respect he has gained in Congress will be helpful as the country winds down it efforts in Iraq. Obama’s stated goal is to have all troops out within 16 months of his inauguration, April of 2010. Gates will oversee that process.
Some critics, even his liberal supporters have criticized his appointments as being too conservative, too many bows to the Clinton and GW Bush Administrations. Obama has been around Washington for less than four years, about two of those campaigning for the Presidency, so he needs people around him that how how the city works. The ‘culture’ of Washington needs a change, so said Obama during the campaign. Critics and not just conservative critics ask how the ‘culture’ can change if his Cabinet is a rehash of the same people. Here’s how: They have new marching orders that come from the top to change or rearrange priorities.
Before January 20th comes around, the Cabinet will have been filled. The rest of the posts to be filled will be the low profile ones, like Education and the Administrator of the Environmental protection Agency-The EPA.
It should be a good four years.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, workers with four-years of college traditionally make about $1 million more during their working life than their counterparts with high school diplomas–but don’t let that figure fool you. True, many top-paying professional jobs require four years of college (or more)–but you needn’t endure four years of study halls and pub-crawls to land a good job. Here are four excellent careers that can combine paid on-the-job training with classroom work, without requiring a four-year degree.
Radiological Technician
Sure, without a four-year degree, med school isn’t an option–but what if you still want to work in healthcare? Healthcare is one of America’s fastest-growing career sectors, expected to add millions of new jobs in the years ahead. If you want a healthcare career without a four-year degree, radiological technician might be an ideal career for you.
Radiologists and radiologic technicians work with sophisticated imaging machines to help diagnose patient illness. The job requires you to understand the in and outs of computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET). While the technology is complex, you needn’t spend four years at university to land a job. In fact, two-year associate’s degree programs are typically the most common credential. If you already have healthcare experience, enrolling in a one-year certificate program may be all the education you need to land an entry-level position. You can find training through hospitals or colleges. You may learn human anatomy and physiology, radiation physics, medical terminology, and patient care and positioning.
The job offers the opportunity to work with patients, and, like many other healthcare careers, is highly portable. You can also earn a competitive salary. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), median annual earnings for radiologists and radiologic technicians stood at $50,260 in May 2007. The highest-paid workers made as much as $71,600.
Electrician
Looking for a truly high-powered career? Consider working as an electrician. Electricians keep the juice flowing in private homes as well as commercial buildings and large industrial complexes. Although learning the requisite skills–everything from electrical theory, blueprint reading, and mathematics to electrical code requirements, safety, and first aid–takes time and effort, a four-year degree is usually not necessary. Most electricians learn their trade through apprenticeship programs which combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction.
As a skilled trade, electrician jobs offer the opportunity to make a comfortable living. According to the BLS, in May 2007, median annual earnings for electricians stood at $44,780, while those in the top 90th percentile earned up to $76,000. Excellent job prospects for workers trained in a wide range of skills (including voice, video, and data wiring), make electrician an attractive choice. The BLS predicts the number of electrician jobs should jump by seven percent, or 52,000 between 2006 and 2016.
Plumber
Although you might think of unclogging drains as unglamorous work, there’s far more to a plumber’s job than you might think. Plumbers install, maintain, and repair entire pipe systems–including the piping that allows nuclear power stations to churn out megawatts of electricity, and the valves that oil refineries use to process crude oil into gasoline.
If you’re attracted to skilled trades, plumbers are expected to see job growth over the next several years. Because the number of open positions should exceed the number of qualified applicants, your job prospects should be excellent. Finally, let’s not forget your wages. Median annual earnings for pipelayers, plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters stood at $44,090 in May 2007. The highest-paid percentile of workers made as $75,070.
Although typically you may not need a bachelor’s degree for a career as a plumber, the training can take up to five years. However, the extended apprenticeship program offered by unions or non-union contractor agencies allows you to earn money while training on the job. At the same time, you may take as much as 144 hours of classroom study per year, learning drafting, blueprint reading, physics, chemistry, safety, and building codes.
Auto Mechanic
It’s every motorhead’s dream job. If you’ve ever dreamed of restoring classic muscle or working on economy imports, a career as a mechanic can help you marry your passion to a livable wage. Median annual earnings for automotive mechanics stood at $34,170, according to the BLS, while the highest-paid mechanics earn as much as $57,650.
Although advancing automotive technology has complicated training required for a job as a skilled automotive mechanic, a four-year degree is usually not necessary. You can earn an associate’s degree in two years through a combination of hands-on practice and classroom study. If you decide to take an accelerated course, you can earn a certificate in six months to a year. If you decide to go for an associate’s degree, most likely you’ll spend between six and eight weeks alternating between full-time work for the automotive service department of a participating business (generally under the supervision of experienced mechanics), and attending classes.
Of course, these are just four of a thousand other rewarding careers that dispense with the four-year degree. Whether it’s checking out your local community college, browsing certificate programs online, or speaking with your local union representative, there’s no limit to the places you can go. No degree? No problem.

Passion parties is a multi level marketing company that specializes in adult parties for women. They carry a wide range products from adult toys to oils and lotions etc. and promote them by arranging and hosting house parties. The company has been around for a little over a decade (founded in 1994) and works with a team of specialized sex counselors and medical professionals to promote education and safety. It focuses on spicing up the love life of couples, and prefers female consultants who can speak freely about sexuality. Today the company is found all over the United States and Canada.
Becoming a consultant…
In order to become a Passion Parties consultant, you must contact a consultant in your local area. You can easily find a consultant on the Passion Parties website by entering what state you live in. Then you must choose between the starter kit, which is $100 with a buying discount of 25%, Passion Pac #1 which is $250 with a buying discount of 40%, or Passion Pac #2 which is $450 with a buying discount of 40%. Any package you choose will come with products and all the materials that you need to get started.
Selling the products…
These products are sold primarily by word of mouth. You need to constantly promote the products and the business opportunity to whoever possible. This is why the consultants in this company need to be able to speak freely and openly about sex. Fortunately, these products tend to sell more easily than some products found in other mlms. The primary sales will come from the parties thrown. You can throw a party at your own house or have someone host a party at their house. In this day in age, women tend to be much more open about sex and find that they have alot of fun at the parties. A group of women having a great time because of your party will definitely lead to sales.
Compensation plan…
There are four compensation levels in this company. You begin at the first level, which is known as team leader. At this level you must personally sell $300 in products, recruit between 1-5 new consultants, and your consultants must collectively sell at least $100 in products. At this level you make 3% commission off of your level 1 distributors and 2% commission off of your level 2 distributors. Your level one distributors are the consultants directly underneath you and the level two distributors are the consultants that join underneath your level one distributors. When this is achieved you have the option to move to level two which is team manager. Now, you must sell $600 in products, have a downline of 6-10 consultants, and they must collectively sell $900 worth of products. Your commission goes to 3% for level one and 4% for level two. The third is executive manager, which requires you to sell $1000 in products, have a downline of 11-14 consultants and they must sell $2500 worth of products. Your commission goes to 5% for level one, 4% for level two, and then you begin to make 3% commission on your level three distributors. The top position is known as Executive Director. In this position, you must sell $1500 in products, have a downline of over 15 consultants, and they must sell $5000 worth of products. When you reach this level you make 5% commission on level one, two and three.
Is it Legit?…
This company is legitimate and a real money making opportunity. You have to have the personality to be able to talk freely about sex and intimacy in order to be successful, but the products themselves are a hot commodity. However, the compensation plan has a pretty small commission percentage with some high expectations.
Personally…
I chose not to participate in this company. Although I think it would be great for a part time business, I tend to prefer companies with higher compensation plans and that focus on more online marketing instead of having to stay local.

Warm up. Preschool children need to warm up before they exercise just like adults do. Make sure you move them around gently for several minutes before instructing them to run, jump or do any type of strenuous movement.
Balance. Good balance is important for almost all athletic activities. Keeping in mind the age of the preschool children, they should be able to balance on one foot from 3-10 seconds. Don’t limit yourself to only standing balance exercises. Children love to get down on the ground and balance on hands and legs and then lift one or even two limbs in the air.
Sports Skills. Have all the children use plastic coffee can lids as Frisbees or wadded up balls of paper with mini-brooms as hockey sticks. You can create a number of sports items from common household supplies. Preschool children need practice with basic sports skills early in life to become competent and proficient enough to enjoy these activities later on. Make sure all children have their own prop so that they can get the most amount of hands-on time practicing.
Aerobic Exercise. Anything that gets preschool children to move quickly and use the large muscle groups in their legs will help provide much needed aerobic exercise. It’s the aerobic exercise that helps burn fat and strengthen their heart and lungs. Relays, obstacle courses, races, dancing and gross motor locomotion around the room are all excellent preschool aerobic activities. Just make sure children take active rests (like walking or moving at a slower pace) between strenuous bursts of activities as they won’t have the endurance an adult has.
Strengthening. Resistance exercise will help prevent childhood obesity by developing muscle mass which burns much more calories than an equal amount of fat. Children can do simple calisthenics like modified push ups, squats, lunges and crunches using their own body weight for resistance or have fun with props such as tug-of-war ropes, weighted bean bags, elastic bands, and water bottles.
Stretching. Preschool children’s muscles need regular stretching which should be done after the exercise session, not before. Any stretches performed should be held still while counting from 5-10 instead of bouncing while stretching. Bouncing stretches or ballistic stretching can tear muscles and lead to a shortening of the muscles instead of elongation.

What If You Only Had a Year to Live?
As a motivational speaker, I start many of my presentations with this question. I like to get audience members thinking about this because I think it has powerful implications. Take a moment right now and seriously consider your answer to this question.
The simple act of asking yourself this question every so often can have a powerful focusing effect on your life. Somehow when we consciously think about how short life is we get serious about using the time that we have. At least that’s what happened to me.
Five years ago I was a twenty-three year old kid going to university with my whole life in front of me. My focus was mostly on myself and having fun. I wasn’t concerned with spending time with my family or being right with myself and with my God. There would be time for that later I thought. I was wrong.
In the span of a few months in the summer of 2001, my life was turned upside down. I’d landed a great summer job as a tour guide on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and I had three days between the end of exams at university, and the first day of training in Ottawa. I came home intending to pack my bags, say goodbye to my family, and head off for a great summer adventure. Instead, that day would be the beginning of a two-year saga that would prove to forever change my life.
When I arrived home that day to pack my bags, my mom was the one who answered the door. She opened the door, took one look at me, and the colour left her face. She noticed immediately what I’d been denying. I’d lost weight, more than thirty pounds. I was frail and sick. Soon we would find out exactly why and that the weight loss was the least of my problems.
My parents wasted no time bringing me in to see my doctor. My family doctor recognized immediately that my condition was serious. He put me in hospital to be monitored while arrangements were made to get me into a hospital in Halifax to see the heart transplant team.
When the cardiologist examined me that day I was in right and left-sided heart failure. My heart muscle was becoming thick and stiff and was increasingly unable to fill with blood. As the condition got worse, my failing heart would cause my body to hold on to excess fluid and the fluid would accumulate throughout my body. First in my hands and feet causing painful swelling, and then in my lungs, making it very difficult to breathe.
When my condition was most severe, I struggled to climb a single flight of stairs without getting out of breathe. I would come home at the end of a morning of class and be absolutely exhausted. I’d need a few hours on the couch just to be able to find the energy to make supper.
When I saw my doctor that day, it didn’t take him long to make a decision about what needed to happen. After reviewing some test results he looked at me and said the words that changed my life, “You need a heart and double lung transplant and you need it now.”
It’s now five years later and odds are good that I have much longer than a year to live, but I still often ask myself “What if you only had a year to live?” Asking myself this question forces me to evaluate my priorities and remember that life is short and that I don’t want to waste a single minute of it. I work hard at making sure that I am fully aware, alert and alive every minute of every day.
Many of us walk around just ‘existing’ without really being alive. If you can think about trying to live like you only have a year to live, you’ll have a sense of urgency about reaching your goals without a sense of panic.
Many people who have had to face death will tell you that you should “Live every day like it’s your last day!” I don’t want you to do that. Imagine how exhausting it would be to try to cram a lifetime into twenty-hour hours.
Don’t live every day like it’s your last day. Just be ALIVE every day.
Here are a few action items for you to think about:
What would you do if you had a year to live? What would be important? What wouldn’t matter? Do you want to DO more? What would you do more? What would you do less? How would you use your time?
Once you get the answers to these questions, write them down and put them somewhere where you can look at them every day. They’ll help you to stay on track and remember what really matters.
