How to Create a Room You Will Love

We’ve all walked into a room of a new apartment and felt that a particular room has the potential to be a special favorite. But to ensure that it does become a favorite, you’ll have to cater not only for the abstract feel of the space but also the visual appeal. After all, you want a place you’ll be able to feel good in after a bad day; a place where you’ll be able to fade into on those cold, rainy nights in; a place all your very own. So let’s get right to it.

The first thing you will have to do to get that room into decorating shape is to empty it out completely. This means that if there are any old pieces of furniture, they’ll have to go – even if only on a temporary basis. Once the room has been cleared, you’ll be able to visualize exactly how you would like the place to look after you’re done.

Next up you’ll have to decide what will be done with the walls. Why the walls first? Well, just like the floor, they can’t be moved out when they are the wrong color. They’ll have to be repainted again, which means all the furniture will have to be covered up or taken out of the room again. As such you’ll have to put some careful thought in about what you would like the room to look like when all the work is done.

When you’ve got the walls figured out, then it’s on to the floor. Now unless you have a substantial budget set aside for this, you’re probably not going to redo the floor. Perhaps touch it up a little and give it a good clean, but essentially floors stay the way they are for a number of years. However, there’s nothing like a decent area rug to either lighten a place up or dim it down; serve as a focal point or as an accessory to one.

Area rugs have been around since the dawn of modern civilization (ca. 3000BC) and have as such become an integral part of the interiors of our homes. In terms of the room you wish to redo, consider the role your area rug will play first. Will it be the thing that captures the attention first? If so, then you’re probably looking for something with a central design, like the medallion of a Persian or Oriental rug. Alternatively, in case you had a different focal point in mind, then the area rug can be used to accentuate it by being a compatible color. The ideas here are endless, but an area rug is a definite must if you want to change the mood of the room you are in with little or no effort.

Now, when you’ve got the floor covered, you can start adding some furniture. This includes decorations for the walls as well as all the other bits of furniture usually added to a room. Remember to take your own comfort and leisure into account as you’ll probably be the one person who spends most time in the room in question. Do take care, however, that when adding items to the room, that its color complements the focal point of the room (if present) or that it at least works well with the rest of the room.
